Resources:
The Center has created and collected a large amount of information about environmentally sensitive unpaved road maintenance. The downloads on this page can be used free of charge as long as proper reference is given to the Center and the University.
Technical Bulletins
Library of Center publications detailing specific "Environmentally Sensitive Road Maintenance" Practices. Each bulletin is grouped by topic area and is specific to one practice.
Driving Surface Aggregate (DSA)
In 2000, the Center developed an aggregate specification specifically designed for use as an unbound wearing surface aggregate for roads. DSA has been used on hundreds of miles of public road in Pennsylvania and was approved by PennDot in 2008. Also included are the "Trail Surface Aggregate" and "Road Aggregates 101" Technical Bulletins.
ESM Field Guide
Coming Soon: The Center recently partnered with the US Forest Service to put many of the Center's ESM practices into a laminated "Field Guide" for distribution to National Forests and LTAPs. Check back later in 2011 for more information.
Clearinghouse
In addition to the material above published "in-house", the Center has collected links to various other unpaved and low-volume road resources.
Products
The Center and Program maintain a list of environmentally sound products such as dust suppressants that are approved for use under the Dirt and Gravel Road Program. Also provided is the process to obtain the programs approval status for a given product.
GIS Data Layers
Download zipfiles containing the GIS shapefiles for Pennsylvania statewide unpaved roads and pollution worksites. All data is based on County Conservation District submissions as of 1/15/2012.
