Trails:

Over the past several years, the Center has been getting more involved in Environmentally Sensitive Trail Maintenance. Many of the Centers strategies ana practices developed for unpaved roads can be adapted for use on trails. This includes the "Trail Mix Aggregate" (TMA) which is a more durable aggregate used for surfacing trails. This page is new and will continue to evolve at the Center completes more trail projects.

"Trail Mix Aggregate" Specifications: A "recipe" for the Center's "Trail Mix Aggregate". This aggregate is designed as an unbound wearing course for trails The Aggregate is based off the Center's DSA aggregate for roads, but has a smaller overall particle size. Trail Mix Aggregate is designed to achieve maximum compacted density and be more resistant to wear and erosion than traditionally used aggregates, and conforms with ADA standards.

Center's Trail Projects:

Upcoming Projects:

  • Technical assistance to the Stroud Region Open Space and Recreation Commission for the placement of approximately one mile of TMA on the Levee Loop Trail in Monroe County.
  • Working with Eastern Industries on the production and placement of TMA on approximately 6 miles of the Buffalo Valley Trail in Union County.
  • Collaboration with the Bureau of Forestry to rehabilitate approximately two miles of ATV trail in Fulton County using Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance Practices.
  • Working with Penn State Altoona to design a new trail and surface it with TMA.

Completed Projects:

Stone Valley Environmental Center: The Center completed oversight of the construction of approximately 1,000' of new trail at the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center in northern Huntingdon County in 2010. The ADA accessible trail involved drainage features such as broad-based dips, pipes, and french mattresses as well as the new Trail Mix Aggregate surface.
